The New Philanthropy

Barabara Ehrenreich writes that the working poor are “the major philantropists of our society. They neglect their own childrenso that the children of others will be cared for; they live in sub-standard housing so that other homes will be shiny and perfect; they endure privation so that inflation will be low and stock prices will be high. To be a member of the working poor is to be an anonymous donor, a nameless benefactor to everyone else.”

Quoted in Holbrook, et al., Global Values 101, viii-ix.

That’s a shocking statement. I’m going to forward it to some people who work with the needy in my community. Thanks, Matt.
