Unhealthy Nalgene?

So, I’m hearing rumors that Nalgene bottles may be unhealthy. Bollocks, I really like mine. But it’s made with a chemical similar to estrogen (bisphenol A) that might do unfortunate things to people. Mountain Equipment Coop has pulled them from their shelves pending a Health Canada Review. Read about it at globeandmail.com.

I did a little more research, and apparently Nalgene makes bottles from a few different types of plastics. The one to avoid is polycarbonate (lexan), while #2, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and #4, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), plastics are supposedly safe. For now. Read about it.

As much as I’m not happy about it, I’ll be leaving my Nalgene empty for a while…
